Plans have been officially announced for a new, American Formula One team, who hope to be on the grid for the start of the 2010 season. The project, led by F1 veterans Peter Windsor and Ken Anderson, will be based in Charlotte, North Carolina, with European satellite facilities likely to be located in Spain.

The team, currently known as simply USF1, say their mission is ‘to prove that American technology, American drivers and the American competitive spirit can compete and win on the F1 global stage’.

Well, shit. I had this written off as a hoax, but April Fool's Day is gone and there are still new articles about this:
Mosleygate gets murkier and murkier

In my opinion, a man's private life is his private life, and if Max wants to crawl around on all fours in a leather suit while getting whipped by hookers wearing war memorabilia, well then that's his thing.

And more on this.

Max Mosley appears certain to resist calls for his resignation as president of world motorsport's governing body, the FIA.

Mosley's position has been brought into question since a national Sunday newspaper article relating to his private life.

The revelations have led to various figures in motorsport calling for Mosley to stand down, amongst them former World Champion Jody Scheckter.

"There is absolutely no question in my mind Mosley should resign," insisted Scheckter.

Long-time adversary Sir Jackie Stewart added: "I just think he has to look very carefully at it (his role) and address his future."

However, Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone maintains Mosley's decision is one he has to make of his own volition, rather than pander to outside interference.

"What Max should do is what he thinks is right because it is only him that's involved, not the FIA," Ecclestone told The Times.

"He must do what he believes, in his heart of hearts, is the right thing."

...

Formula One motor racing chief Max Mosley is battling to keep his job today after it was revealed he had taken part in a Nazi-style sex orgy with five prostitutes.

Jewish groups condemned Mr Mosley, whose father, Oswald, led the British Union of Fascists in the 1930s and was a friend of Adolf Hitler.

The 67-year-old father of two was caught on video by the News of the World in a "torture chamber" set up in a £2million Chelsea flat.

Six days to Malaysia and if Australia is anything to go by it should be an exciting race. Here's hoping there be Red, Silver and Blue teams all racing for the win. If we have fewer mistakes and more engine reliability that will be the case.

Six Ferrari's started, not one finished. I'm not 100% certain about the others but at least three were engine failures including Massa, Raikonnen, and Bourdais. That does not bode well for the red team.

Still with Rubenio's disqualification Raikonnen gets a point. I really would've like to see fewer mistakes from both Ferrari drivers though. It was quite shoddy.

I am pleased to see the BMW's doing well. If they can pull out a few more enhancements to that car they will be challenging for the top, and if Ferrari can get their reliability and driver error issues sorted out, there'll be three teams racing there. I'm also quite impressed with what Alonso managed with what is clearly a shitty Renault.

All in all I think that was an exciting start to the season, and I'm sure Malaysia will be more of the same.

So Uncle Ron is not leaving, retiring, quitting or being fired. He has pretty much said he is staying at the head of the team and the company, which I think is a good move. Now all that's left is the criminal investigation. Hopefully none of this will affect McLaren this year. All I'm interested in is racing so let's get to that.

In a couple of days it will be the first race of a new season. With a number of rule changes (no traction control/drive aids being the one everyone is talking about) it should prove to be an exciting season. Methinks Ferrari is going to run away with it, but mehopes not. I want to see racing, like we did last year, with fewer scandals, and maybe BMW chasing down the top 2 teams as well.

And now Bernie has got it into his head that all races that don't fit with a comfortable schedule with the Europeans should be a night race (I'm talking about the fact that he is threatening to drop the Aussie GP if they don't schedule the race at night in the future).

Not that I mind, comfortable European times are comfortable South African times too. But shit, Bernie. Don't you think it's a bit insane to expect the Aussies to change their schedule for the Europeans?

Renault guilty but not punished

The WMSC revealed that they arrived at a 'guilty, but no punishment' verdict because Renault gained no advantage from the four McLaren drawings that Phil Mackareth brought from Woking.

- Planet F1

If more evidence comes to light, like the McLaren case, the Renault case will be reopened. I wonder why there aren't criminal cases. I mean this amounts to corporate espionage, in both cases, and whether an advantage has been gained or not makes no difference in a criminal case.

Jerez, Spain - Fernando Alonso's potential return to Renault gathered momentum on Wednesday when Giancarlo Fisichella seemed prepared to switch to a rival team.

The Renault driver - who partnered the two-time world champion Alonso for two years - stated his interest in joining Force India after testing for the rookie team at the Circuit de Jerez.

The 34-year-old Italian driver isn't guaranteed his seat at Renault with team boss Flavio Briatore already saying that he would make a driver change for the 2008 season, with Heiki Kovalainen's place also uncertain.

It is going to be very interesting to see what the FIA do about this, if anything at all.

And correct me if I am wrong, but this evidence against Renault seems more damning than that which was brought against McLaren?

Sadly I do not have much faith in the FIA, so I will be surprised if Renault receive comparatively equal or even harsher punishment than McLaren.

To answer my own question:

The legal dossier contains:

* 18 witness statements in which Renault F1 employees admit that they viewed confidential technical information belonging to McLaren on a total of 11 computers owned by Renault F1.

* Papers in the document say that in March 2006, 33 files of confidential technical information belonging to McLaren were copied on to 11 floppy disks, which were loaded on to Renault F1's computer system in September 2006.

* The dossier says the 33 files contain more than 780 individual drawings outlining the entire technical blueprint of the 2006 and 2007 McLaren F1 cars.

* The files were uploaded on to 11 Renault F1 computers, and were discussed by up to 18 Renault F1 personnel, including a group of senior engineering chiefs and heads of department within Renault F1, according to documents in the dossier.

Source

So now the question is what punishment will the FIA meet out. McLaren's fine was huge and they were removed from the constructors. Will Renault be removed from next year's constructors' championship?

So Alonso is leaving McLaren. Where do you think he will end up? Probably Williams, I would guess, and Frank will probably be quite pleased to have him. I still don't see Ferrari picking him up when Kimi's contract expires in 2009.

Edit: Seems that he is free to go to any team, so maybe Renault is an option.

Alonso's future is still undecided, and it seems it will remains so until mid-November. There are apparently rumors that he may go the BMW for a season with the hope of going to Ferrari when Kimi's contract is up in 2009. I'm not so sure about the Ferrari thing. I just can't see it happening. And I'm not sure how I would feel about him going to BMW. I think Heidfeld is doing a perfectly good job there, and Kubica is a great driver too.

Yes, what a disappointing race. Kimi can thank Massa for his great get away as Massa impeded Hamilton off the line by swerving to the left, blocking Hamilton and letting Kimi get past. Team orders ftw. Yes it was legal and the rest but this Formula 1 racing, not fucking chess. Shit like that should not be allowed.

Anyway, the FIA seems to be a force of their own, first they break protocol by only fining Honda, McLaren and Super Aguri instead of imposing grid penalties for the drivers, but they also decide that now they are not going to sanction two teams who have violated the rules. What has F1 come to.

Don't get my wrong, I by no means justify Kimi being dethroned, but I still think the offending teams should be penalised without rearranging the championship.

I too was saddened by Massa not taking the win at his home race, a win he so very much deserved, but that's F1 and team orders for you.

Obvious flaws aside there was some great racing. Hamilton made a rookie mistake that alone would not have cost him the championship, but a faulty gearbox getting stuck in neutral for a while dropped him to 18th in the race, costing him a good 40 seconds, pretty much destroyed Hamilton's rookie championship hopes. McLaren then tried to rescue the rookie by changing him to a 3 stop strategy, which did not work out too well. Hamilton made a good drive to make up positions and eventually ended the race in 7th place, unable to catch the BMW's in front of him. Maybe because the BMW's had a advantage due to fuel irregularities, maybe because the McLaren was just not fast enough. Brilliant drive from Kubica, even if he did have advantage. Not a bad outing for Nakajima's début race finishing in 10th, even if he did ride over his pit crew.

All that said, well done to Kimi. He has been a brilliant driver this year and if it were not for Ferrari's unreliability earlier in the year I am sure he would have easily taken the title a race or 2 back. You also have to admit, brilliant year from the rookie Hamilton. Yes, he had a good car, but he was still able to out drive his team mate and lead the championship until the last race. Not something that happens to a driver in their rookie year. Lets hope the kid has what it takes to do the same and better next year.

What a race. An over-eager and not experienced enough Hamilton screwed his own championship up. He should've wrapped the title up in China. Instead he walks away without it.

Nakajima made a great rookie pit-stop. That technician still helped put the tire on before hopping away on his unbroken foot. That's dedication for you.

And Massa played the team game. That race was his, but he had a role to play in deciding the championship. You could see the disappointment on his face in the interviews.

Under Formula One racing’s technical regulations fuel temperatures are not allowed to fall more than 10 degrees Celsius below ambient air temperature at any time. According to FIA data, Williams and BMW Sauber exceeded this range during the race, but after lengthy deliberations stewards chose not to impose sanctions.

However, McLaren are expected to appeal the stewards' decision, which if overturned could have serious implications for the 2007 drivers' championship.

So, I am very sad that another year of Formula 1 has come to an end, but I am very excited about next year. Wikipedia has a nice season preview page.

So, predictions for teams, championship contenders, tracks and new teams?

I certainly would like to see Massa and Hamilton fight for a championship title next year. Im very interested to see where Alonso will end up and who fills his space at McLaren. I like Kubica for the the position and a serious contender. I am also interested to see if McLaren pass the FIA scrutiny that their 2008 car is going to undergo. His Mosleyness has already said the McLaren will be gone over with a fine-tooth comb.

For the next 3 months I am going to thrive on any and all information related to the 2008 season, so lets keep the forum up to date.

While the Singapore race next year will technically be a night race, in that it will be held at hours that most of us would call night, it cannot be called a night race in terms of light. I mean:

The proposal, which includes installing about 1,500 lightning projectors, powered by 12 twin-power generators at the Singapore circuit, was handed to the FIA in Paris on 10th October.

"An overall average of about 3,000lux levels is required to illuminate the circuit, which is enough to meet High Definition Television broadcast standards," the promoters said.

"As a result, the track will be almost four times brighter than a typical stadium."

Planet-F1

Heh, heh. Night race indeed. Still it should be awesome to watch. Can't wait.

And for the third successive race weekend the weather is set to play a role in the outcome of the race and perhaps even the outcome of the Drivers' Championship as downpours are expected in Brazil.

More wetness. Hmm, will Hamilton hold it together? Or will Alonso's experience in the wet let him take the win? Let's not count Kimi out just yet either: anything can happen in the wet. It gets interesting...
